The Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and one of the most iconic paths leading to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. By choosing this route with Horn and Horizon Safaris, you follow in the footsteps of Hans Meyer, who completed the first successful ascent in 1889. This classic trail runs entirely within Kilimanjaro National Park and offers a diverse trekking experience through all of the mountain’s climatic zones. Climbers journey from lush tropical rainforest to moorland, then into alpine desert, and finally reach the icy summit zone.

Day 01 :

Day 1: Arrival at Airport (JRO) and Transfer to Hotel in Moshi.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our driver and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, a charming town nestled at the foothills of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.
After check-in, you will have time to settle in and enjoy a delicious meal at the hotel. Later, you will meet your experienced mountain guide for a comprehensive pre-trek briefing, where you will receive important information and guidance about your upcoming climb.
Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the adventure ahead while enjoying the peaceful hotel surroundings. Your overnight stay at the hotel will ensure you are well-rested and ready to begin your unforgettable journey to the roof of Africa.

Day 02 :

Day 2: Moshi - Marangu Gate - Mandara Huts.

• Distance: 12 km
• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest
After an early breakfast in Moshi, you will depart for a scenic one-hour drive to Marangu Gate, the main entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, you will complete park registration formalities before beginning your trek. The journey starts with a gentle ascent through the lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, vibrant vegetation, and the sounds of nature create a magical atmosphere. Along the trail, you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species unique to this ecosystem. After approximately 4-5 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut (2,740 m). Here, you will enjoy a warm meal and have time to relax in the comfortable A-frame huts nestled within the forest. In the evening, there is an optional acclimatization walk to Maundi Crater, where you can take in stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and begin adjusting to the altitude. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Mandara Hut as you prepare for the next stage of your climb.

Day 03 :

Day 3: Mandara Huts - Horombo Huts.

• Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
• Habitat: Heathland
Wake up around 6:30 AM and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off from Mandara Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind, passing through scenic clearings before entering the heath and moorland zone. Along the way, you will encounter fascinating alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias and towering groundsels, unique to Mount Kilimanjaro’s ecosystem. As you continue ascending, breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak begin to unfold. After a lunch break along the trail, proceed toward Horombo Hut (3,690 m), arriving in the afternoon with spectacular views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peak. After settling in, enjoy dinner and rest for the evening. To support acclimatization, you may choose to take an optional acclimatization hike toward the base of Mawenzi before returning to Horombo Hut, or spend an additional rest day. Overnight stay at Horombo Hut.

Day 04 :

Day 4: Horombo Huts - Kibo Huts.

• Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, depart from Horombo Hut and begin your trek toward Kibo Hut. The landscape dramatically changes as you leave the heathland behind and cross the vast alpine desert saddle stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. This striking high-altitude terrain offers sweeping views and a true sense of Kilimanjaro’s rugged beauty. After lunch along the route, continue across the saddle to Kibo Hut, arriving in the afternoon. There is no running water at Kibo Hut, so this is a time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit attempt. After an early dinner at approximately 6:30 PM, you will get a few hours of sleep before waking around 10:30 PM to prepare your summit gear. The final ascent begins around 11:30 PM as you set out under the stars toward the crater rim. Overnight rest at Kibo Hut before the summit climb.

Day 05 :

Day 5: Summit Day! Kibo Huts - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Huts.

• Distance: 4 km ascent / 14 km descent
• Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Around midnight, begin your summit push toward Gilman's Point (5,685 m). This is the most challenging part of the climb, involving a steep and demanding ascent over scree and switchbacks. Your experienced guides will support and encourage you every step of the way. After reaching Gilman’s Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. If weather conditions permit, you will witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains - a truly unforgettable reward for your efforts. After celebrating your remarkable achievement and taking photos at the summit, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments before continuing down to Horombo Hut. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay as your body recovers from this extraordinary day.

Day 06 :

Day 6: Horombo Huts - Marangu Gate - Moshi.

• Distance: 18 km
• Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate, enjoying your last views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s beautiful slopes. Upon arrival at the gate, you will receive your well-earned summit certificate in recognition of your achievement. From there, transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, a delicious meal, and a comfortable overnight stay.
